The Art Of The Practice
Sound has been used as a doorway into stillness for longer than written history can fully account for. Long before Buddhism arrived in Tibet, the indigenous Bön tradition is understood to have used early forms of these bowls in rituals, to clear what no longer served and to move between worlds.
The seven metals traditionally found within a singing bowl, ( gold, silver, copper, iron, tin, lead and mercury) are used in Tibetan medicine in the form of precious pills (like Rinchen Rilbu). These metals are meticulously purified and detoxified, and are believed to work in the invisible energy pathways inside the body.
Some of the bowls Zi Ling uses have been singing for over a hundred years, carrying the mystery of the mountains and the warmth of prayers older than any of us. When they sound, you are not simply listening. You are being met by something extremely sacred; an ancient knowing of healing.
House of Sgra: Meaning
& Pronunciation
Sgra (pronounced ‘dra’) is the Tibetan word for sound. Before it became a name, it was simply this: the single note beneath all others, the vibration said to precede thought, form and even time itself.
The name was chosen deliberately, and it has since taken on its own life within the House. Sound, understood this way, is not decoration or ambience. It is closer to a foundational energy, present before language, before self, before the noise we spend our lives learning to quiet. A gifted statue of Shiva Nataraja, the cosmic dancer whose movement is said to hold destruction and rebirth within a single sound, sits within the House as a quiet reminder of this same idea, echoed across traditions far beyond Tibet.
The Vision Behind
House Of Sgra
Zi Ling | Founder Of House Of Sgra
House of Sgra began with a simple conviction: that the most important relationship any of us will ever hold is the one we have with ourselves, and that this relationship deserves a space as considered as it is. Zi Ling founded House of Sgra to give that belief a home, drawing on years spent studying the history, provenance and spiritual weight of the Tibetan and Himalayan bowls she now shares with every member.
